General Strike tommorow in France

Tommorow there will be a General Strike in France. I personally am incredibly excited about the situation. last week 1,000,000 people were mobilised *across different cities* (British demo organisers take note!). Today the BBC reported that a student group snubbed the opportunity to discuss the law with de villepin. Let see what happens.

The news has been rather amusing over this.

France demo warning on BBC where apparently the government is warning Britons not to travel to France! OMG - like what's going to happen to you if you do? You might get ideas that's what!

The Syndey Morning Herald quotes a guy saying "I never imagined I would ever see this in Paris" (nice pic though) Who'd have though Paris would be hit by riots - unheard of... erm...

The Washington Post is horrified that the riots are "seven blocks from the Eiffel Tower" (which is quite a long way isn't it?) with "columns of helmeted riot police advancing across the greensward of a prominent tourist venue" and that bizarrely "four vehicles were turned over" NO! They didn't turn over a handful of vehicles - Shit!

At least the Washington Post has the good grace to blame Sarkozy for being a bile filled little fucker (well, they don't use those words)...

It's time we started to learn French again I think - I wonder if we could turn our strikes on Tuesday into something strong on the back of this?

But note also an alarming increase in the number of French people who are soi-dissant racists:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4832238.stm
"More than three in every 10 said they were "a bit racist" or "somewhat racist". Only 32% of people said they would notify police of racist behaviour they witnessed, compared to 50% in the previous year."

This is an opportunity to turn that around though isn't it?

The public sector strikes in France (95?) were a big set back for the FN (although not one they could not recover from) because it drew out the contradictions between the mass support for those strikes and the FN's opposition to them...

These strikes and riots are opposed by the FN and the act of taking part (particularly I think for the young) could be a real chance to help challenge that racist current of ideas...

No guarentees of course, but ideas can change very rapidly in my view.
